🏚️ Our Quiet Old House in Salem
We bought our home in Salem four years ago from a lovely older couple, Ben and Sandra, who had lived here for over 40 years. They raised two children within these walls and left behind a warm, peaceful energy, or so we thought.
After decades of memories, they moved out West to enjoy retirement. We settled in and became close with our neighbor, Susan, who had known the couple for ages. She kept in touch with them and would sometimes share updates about their lives. .
Ben had been in declining health, we learned recently. But nothing could have prepared us for what happened next.
🌒 The Night Something Didn’t Feel Right
Just after 12:45 AM, basically the middle of the night, I heard the familiar creak of our stepson’s bedroom door. Click. Creak. Click. It opened… then closed. I didn’t think too much of it at the time.
Our stepson, Tim, is in his early 20s. He’s back home finishing his final year of college, and he’s often in and out at odd hours. His room is the master bedroom, the only one with its own bathroom so it’s easy to hear when someone goes in or out.
The next morning, over coffee, I casually asked my own daughter if Tim had come home late. “No,” she said. “He stayed at a friend’s.”
Confused, I asked my younger kids if either of them had gone into their brother’s room. They looked genuinely puzzled and maybe a little scared. “No,” they insisted. “We didn’t go in there.”
That’s when it hit me. I knew what I heard. That wasn’t my imagination. That door moved. Someone, or something, had been in that room.

🪦 Then Came the News
Later that day, Susan came by with a somber look. “I just wanted to let you know… Ben passed away yesterday,” she said softly.
Time stopped for a second. I felt that sharp jolt in my chest, followed by a cold, crawling sensation down my spine. I didn’t know him all that well but he passed away yesterday. At around the exact same time I heard the door open and close.
I looked back toward the hallway, toward Tim’s empty room, and suddenly everything made sense. Ben had lived in this house for over four decades. That master bedroom? It had been his.
🕯️ Was It Ben Saying Goodbye?
I can’t explain what happened that night. But I can’t ignore it either. I don’t know if you believe in ghosts, spirits, or simply the energy people leave behind but I felt something real. Something deep. And I don’t think I was alone in that hallway. If it was Ben, I hope it was his way of saying one last goodbye to the place he called home.

We’re still wrapping our heads around it all. But if you’ve ever had a paranormal experience, especially in an old home or in Salem, drop it in the comments below. We’d love to hear your story (and maybe get a little spooked together).
