A Girl Born in Shadows
In the misty streets of Ravensburg, Germany, in 1623, a girl named Hellin von Drachenfels was born. From a young age, villagers whispered that she could see what others could not: shadows that moved on their own, whispers in empty rooms, and fleeting faces in mirrors that disappeared when approached. Her family, both fearful and proud, often locked her away during storms, fearing her strange premonitions.
By her sixteenth birthday, Hellin’s powers had become infamous. She was known to cause objects to fly across rooms, extinguish candles with a mere glare, and whisper secrets no one dared repeat. Some said she could even curse the cruel, bringing misfortune to anyone who crossed her.
A Tragic Fate
In 1639, at the age of 16, Hellin was accused of witchcraft by the local council after a series of mysterious deaths and accidents in Ravensburg. During her trial, she maintained her innocence, claiming her “powers” were merely protective, meant to warn her neighbors of danger.
The council did not believe her. Hellin was condemned to death and hanged in the town square on a cold, fog-laden morning in 1639. Witnesses later claimed that as she died, her eyes glowed with an unnatural light, and a chilling wind swept through the square, scattering hats, papers, and even candles in the onlookers’ hands.

The Birth of a Poltergeist
Hellin’s death was not the end. Legend says her spirit could not rest, bound to the site of her execution and the house where she had grown up. Soon, strange occurrences began: doors slammed, objects moved on their own, and chilling laughter echoed through empty rooms. Locals whispered that Hellin had become a poltergeist, her mischievous nature amplified by the injustice of her untimely death.
Over the centuries, her legend grew. She became a guardian of chaos, appearing to those who dared enter abandoned houses, daring children and adults alike to face their deepest fears. Her poltergeist was said to delight in pranks, eerie sounds, and the subtle terror of the unknown.
Hellin in Atmosfear
Centuries later, game designers gave life to this legend in the 1990s VHS board game Atmosfear. Hellin became a central character, a mischievous and unpredictable poltergeist who disrupted players’ strategies and haunted the living room with her eerie presence. Though entirely fictional in the game, her story draws from centuries of ghostly folklore, giving her a chilling authenticity that keeps players on edge.
Why She Haunts Our Imagination
Hellin is more than a character; she is a spirit of mischief, fear, and suspense, a reminder that injustice and tragedy can linger long after death. Her story, blending history, legend, and imagination, makes her one of the most hauntingly memorable figures in horror games—and in the minds of those who dare to play.
